Last month, Governor Murphy began the Fiscal Year 2024 budget process with his Budget Address. The governor’s budget message kicks off a legislative review process that will include a series of public hearings and committee meetings. Murphy and lawmakers must agree on a balanced budget before July 1.
Governor Murphy’s budget addressed food insecurity in a variety of ways, including:
- $85 million in support of food banks and emergency feeding organizations
- $20 million in new funding for the Working-Class Families’ Anti-Hunger Act, expanding access to free school meals to 25,000 more New Jersey students
- $1.75 million for the Healthy Corner Store Initiative
- Funding to ensure a minimum of $95 a month to every household receiving SNAP benefits
Public hearings on the proposed budget have been scheduled, both in-person and virtually. To register and for more information, click here.
