Tell Congress to outlaw lunch shaming

New federal legislation would stop schools from shaming students who have unpaid school meal fees. Weigh in on this important issue.

Two pieces of federal legislation were recently introduce that would outlaw any measures that target students when families fall behind on school meal fees.

In addition to outlawing lunch shaming, the No Shame at School Act would help make more children certified for free or reduced-price school meals.

The Anti-Lunch Shaming Act of 2019 would require all communication related to unpaid school meals fees be directed to the child’s parent or guardian, among other measures.

Take action now to help advances these important measures.

We have heard many stories in New Jersey and beyond of students who were denied a meal, served an alternative meal or barred from attending the prom.

This should not be allowed. School districts must find other ways to collect this debt.
