Congress Approves Waiver Extension for Summer Meals

Today, Congress approved a bipartisan extension to provide free summer meals and keep kids fed. This bill will extend flexibilities for summer meals in 2022 by extending waivers related to the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and Seamless Summer Option (SSO). It will also increase reimbursement rates for the 2022-2023 school year, extend administrative and paperwork flexibilities, and provides support to the Child and Adult Care Feeding Program (CACFP).

Children need healthy meals to learn and grow, and children in food insecure households are at a higher risk of suffering from chronic diseases like asthma and depression. Even before the pandemic, one in every seven households with children struggled to put enough food on the table.

The Keep Kids Fed Act now goes to President Biden’s desk where it is expected to be signed. To learn more, read the legislation here, and check out this fact sheet from the House Committee on Education and Labor.
